Frilandmusset or Open Air museum in english is a place where time is stuck at hundreds of year back in danish country life. Have left no stone unturned to preserve the rural houses of every regions of Denmark. Opened in 1897 by an enthusiastic museum inspector Bernherd Olsen to preserve Danish rural houses and cultures of past. It sized about 40 hectares is one of the largest open air museum in Scandinavia.
Where & How to reach: Frilandmusset is around 16km away from city centre at Kongens Lyngby. You can take the train from the city stations to Norreport then catch a bus towards Holte St ( Bus # 184 ) or you can get down at Gentofte and catch bus. Rejsekort will cost you around 26DKK and single ticket will cost you 60DKK. Time to reach should be around 30-40mins.
Entering into the site, you will feel like a rural ancient world of Danish living. Old rural thatched houses, armor, equipment, artifacts, farms, windmills are all dated back to 100s of years. These are mostly the houses in period 1650-1950.
Children as well as adults will enjoy and get to know how Danish people used to live, cook food, work. Area is vast and you can catch the horse buggy from some points to give a round.
Each of the houses in museum area are full of furnished and equipped genuine – tools – kitchen utensils – household items and textiles. Each building has a garden in front of it decorated the same way as it was in earlier days.
It is a perfect place for family day out. Many people come here for a picnic and there’s cafe area which has benches to seat n eat. If you are curious of danish history then you must visit this place. The museum contains buildings from many of the remote Danish islands like Faroe Islands, Bornholm, Læsø and some from Danish possession Southern Schleswig in Germany and Scania and Halland in Sweden. It is said that these ancient buildings are built brick by brick and artifacts are lifted and shifted carefully from their original locations. There are 25 historic gardens or cultural landscapes where animals of old Danish breeds are grazing ( mostly Ducks, pigs, horses, chickens ).
Activities :
Some farmhouses arranges workshops in it’s premises – where the visitor can experience different types of handicraft items and tools . Many activities are conducted at the Open Air Museum. Visitors even be surprised by people dressed in their national costumes or everyday clothing as a blacksmith – miller – shoemaker – housewife from the past – who may welcome you to the museum.
Opening and Tickets:
It is opened from Tuesday – Sunday. (10- 16 Hrs )
Day tickets for adult is 80DKK whereas Family ticket which includes 1 Adult + 1 kid is 70DKK. There are other options like season pass.
